US hospitals were always going to be among the hardest hit during a recession due to people economising and prioritising other needs above health insurance.

The trickle-down effects of the free market economy may lead drug development companies, which rely on hospitals investing in improved and new drugs, to feel the strain.

This study by the Massachusetts Hospital Association suggests how hospitals can avoid this situation and continue current levels of care.
